In good weather, covering the distance to town would take at least an hour and a half. In rain and mud, twice as long. After the family had settled into the sanctuary of the consulate grounds in Qujiang, I felt it was long overdue for me to look for work. My brother Ping Tsung had by this time flown off to the war-time capital Chungking to act as English secretary and interpreter to Lt. General Wong Chun Kau who was then the head of the Chinese Air Defence. My eldest brother Pak Chuen, on the other hand, was waiting for official confirmation of his appointment as regiment commander entrusted with the defence of Qujiang.
Eventually, however, he decided to wait first for the result of my Chinese history paper. After he learned that I had received a good mark in the latter paper, he concluded that no more than a genuine mistake must have been made, brought on not by ignorance but by illness or some other reasonable excuse. So, miraculously as far as I was concerned, he had marked my essay on its own merit as if there had been no mistake made about the subject matter. The interview on my algebra paper started with Mrs Faid inquiring if I took drugs!
As Ping Tsung and I did not even have a tuxedo, but dearly wished to attend, we felt obliged to take the matter to our parents to seek their assistance. We were pleasantly surprised when they raised no difficulty, readily gave us the money for the tickets, and forthwith sent for the tailor to have our tuxedos made. Before we could even begin to rejoice, however, they made the bombshell announcement that we would of course be taking sisters Josephine and Margaret to the ball. Judgment had been pronounced, and no room was left whatever for argument or discussion.
