In 1196, Daoxue was further labeled as “false learning,” and Zhu Xi was impeached for ten crimes. In 1199, Zhu Xi’s official title and privileges were removed and his status reduced to a commoner. 43 However, not every Ru literatus was comfortable with Song Daoxue’s narrowly defined Ru learning. 44 In short, Zhu Xi’s orthodox Ru learning of Daoxue, or, what is called “neo-Confucianism,” was once viewed as a heterodox learning as well.
