Adams’s letter of August 19, 1774, to her husband is an excellent example of her ability to communicate thoughtfully while drawing on a variety of concepts that only a highly educated person of her time (let alone the present) would understand. Hence her references to events described nearly two millennia earlier by the Greek historian Polybius in his Histories.
