To start, spiral the end of rope once around the main climbing rope, and then a second time on the figure-of-eight side of the first spiral. The double-stopper knot is an essential safety back-up. Re-tie the knot if you have not left enough rope to tie a double-stopper knot securely. 5 5 To complete the double-stopper knot, thread the end through the two loops that are formed, and tighten it to fit against the figure-of-eight knot. Check that the loop is larger than the diameter of the locking karabiner you will clip it into.

For safety, always finish the knot with a double-stopper knot (see Steps four and five above). 4 4 Tie a double-stopper knot. Be sure to choose a shoe for your level of ability. Some climbers wear very tight, flexible rock shoes so they can feel the rock surface. This may help where precision is paramount, but it’s unnecessary if you are taking your first steps into the sport. Begin with a robust, comfortable shoe. As you develop finesse, and find that you like to feel every nuance in the rock, go for a shoe that is soft and flexible, but fairly tight-fitting. Some shoes are better suited to certain styles of climbing.
